In light of TIFF coming to an end, it is a wonderful time to take a look back at a festival classic. Don McKellar, the filmmaker behind Last Night (1997) and part of this year’s Live Directors Series, created this witty short film for TIFF to play at the 2000 festival. McKellar’s slyly autobiographical film takes jabs at the surly attendees who made his early job as a theater coordinator very difficult. The camera veers across a crowded theater while a sardonic commentary (voiced by McKellar) grimly recounts the crying projectionists, angry Slavic directors and unruly patrons that seem to return every year. It is a fittingly tongue-in-cheek film from a director who has served as an integral part of TIFF for many years.
