Anthony Mann‘s interview for The Movies in 1967—which can also be found on the Criterion Collection edition of The Furies—is a wonderful peek into the director’s extensive knowledge of film and classic work (especially his run of ‘psychological westerns’). Appropriately titled Actions Speak Louder Than Words, the segment was filmed while Mann was shooting on-location in London for his final movie, A Dandy in Aspic. Mann’s exploration of screen violence as intrinsic to a character’s emotional struggle—as well as, he candidly admits, essential in building drama for an audience—is heavily dealt with, as is the director’s influences (Murnau!) and the immediacy of film as a medium for expression.
