With Real Life, Albert Brooks foretold of the obsessive tactics producers utilize in the reality television business long before they became commonplace–so, it’s appropriate its teaser pokes fun at society’s everything-is-cooler-in-3-D predilection. This 3-minute trailer–which gives very little detail about the actual film–finds Brooks in character, desperately promoting his film by switching to a three-dimensional format for no real reason (if you don’t have the glasses, he adds, you can simply turn to the person next to you and borrow red and blue cellophane paper) and shamelessly exploiting its cheap thrills for the audience, including tossing a glass of water at the screen, showing off his kung-fu, and bringing in world-champion paddle-ball player Randy Brown. If only all trailers were this fun.
