Ariel Kleiman‘s Deeper Than Yesterday is set entirely on a military submarine, where the men, having spent three months on duty, are beginning to show reveal their basest impulses and desires. The film mainly hones its focus on Oleg, the sub’s captain, who is desperately holding to his last shred of humanity while his shipmates devolve around him. Things become more complicated when the men spot a female corpse adrift at sea and bring her aboard. Though often difficult to watch, Kleiman’s film is filled with purpose and intensity, and deft character building contributes heavily to the effectiveness of his vision. Be on the lookout for his upcoming feature Partisan, starring Vincent Cassel.
