An observational short documentary shrouded in darkness and glimpsing unique human behavior, Black And White Trypps Number Three is the third entry in the “Trypps” film series created by experimental filmmaker Ben Russell (his most recent work is A Spell To Ward Off The Darkness, a feature-length collaboration with Ben Rivers). Filmed at a concert played by the noise rock band Lightning Bolt, Russell trains his camera eye on the show’s audience, capturing the spectator’s spontaneous reactions to the aggressively primal performance. The footage reveals a fascinatingly voyeuristic portrait that, according to the director, sees “the transformation of a rock audience’s collective freak-out into a trance ritual of the highest spiritual order”.
