Picking up the Academy Award for Best Animated Short, Balance (1989) is a stop-motion piece directed by twin German filmmakers Christoph and Wolfgang Lauenstein (the brothers’ work that may be most familiar to viewers is the animated dream sequence that they contributed to Tarsem Singh’s 2006 film The Fall). Curiously unsettling in its stripped-down imagery and atmosphere of solitude while exploring the dark side of a twisted group dynamic, Balance depicts the struggle of five fisherman on a particularly unstable platform and the conflict that develops between them after they find a mysterious box.
