Destin Cretton Interview (Short Term 12)

Short Term 12

Destin Cretton is an American writer and director whose latest feature film, Short Term 12, explores the staff and community members at a foster care facility. The film won four awards at the Locarno International Film Festival and is currently nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards.

Short Term 12 was selected as the opening film for the Rendezvous With Madness film festival in Toronto. Destin joined us in the offices of FilmsWeLike, the film’s Canadian distributor, to discuss the story’s inception, how it was visually realized and its connection to his first feature, I Am Not a Hipster, while construction loomed outside.
