Joe Dante unquestionably grew up watching the stop-motion wizadry of Ray Harryhausen. The name became synonymous with the “creature features” of the 1950s—a genre that he helped pioneer through his stunning work on special effects—and Dante aided in carrying his legacy well through the decades. These formidable minds came together for this lovely interview to discuss a few of the very innovative techniques used in Earth vs. The Flying Saucers (1956). It’s not quite clear what the date is on this interview, but it was uploaded to Youtube in 2012—just a year before Harryhausen’s passing.

Update: Joe Dante weighs in on the timeline of the interview, noting that it was for the film’s Laserdisc release (presumably this edition).
