Pier Paolo Pasolini cast influential opera singer Maria Callas to star in his adaptation of Euripides’ Media. It was released in 1970 and has since been lauded for the beautiful scenery of the many locations Pasolini chose to work with (including Turkey, Syria, and Italy). The Super 8 footage above follows Pasolini and Callas as they travel around Europe to some of these locales and shoot their movie. It is incredibly evocative, and the amorphous nature of the images—from moments in the car to footage of the crew members joking around the set—add a powerful intimacy to the document.
