Set for theatrical release in 2015, HEAVEN KNOWS WHAT was a festival favourite in 2014, winning the C.I.C.A.E. Award at Venice. Based on lead actress Arielle Holmes’ writing on her own life experience, the film centres on a couple struggling with drug addiction in New York City. In this interview, the co-directors Joshua and Ben Safdie give some insight into how the project began, its unique aesthetic, and its relationship to some of their previous collaborations – GO GET SOME ROSEMARY, LENNY COOKE and THE BLACK BALLOON.
This interview is from Issue #23 of The Seventh Art (also featuring Andrew Bujalski, Mathieu Kleyebe Abonnenc, and a video essay about the style of Xavier Dolan). You can see the full Safdie Brothers interview here.
