The short below, an early structural work from James Benning presented in his 1978 film Grand Opera, is a playful experiment of simple, yet confounding, editing and set-up. A woman walks through two doors, the flickering editing synchronized to the piano notes on the soundtrack, while a man adjacent to her slowly lifts up his shirt. Through this repetitive structure, Benning toys with quick alterations in the music, editing and images in the mirror hanging on the door–including, at one point, a naked man leaning up against the wall.
