Christmas has come and gone already, but it’s hardly too late for holiday-themed short from Portugal’s Miguel Gomes (Tabu). Numerous allusions to myth and history suggest the short is sprung from personal memory, as well as minute details like M&Ms nestled in a sleeping dad’s hair, or a fuzzy political radio broadcast playing through the house Some of the scenes feel plaintive—more often, celebratory. Although billed as a “musical comedy”, there isn’t any singing coming from the characters; the music referenced is the clamoring of silverware, loud dinner-table discussions, hyperactive children, holiday music and automated toy sets dominating the soundtrack. Among other things, Inventario De Natal effectively captures the overwhelming bustle and noise of an evening with the relatives.
