Noah Baumbach & Greta Gerwig‘s Frances Ha, which opened this weekend in Toronto, continues to expand its release. Much has been made of the influence of both Woody Allen‘s Manhattan and the French New Wave films of Eric Rohmer and François Truffaut, but the most obvious nod in the film has to be to Leos Carax‘s Mauvais Sang (1986). Check out the clip above — if you’ve had a chance to see Frances Ha, surely this will look familiar.
Here’s a quote from Baumbach in an interview with Free Press Houston:
“I’m familiar with the film and scene you’re talking about,” Baumbach says. “I hadn’t intended to use that particular song, yet when we were editing the film we tried a few songs with that sequence. The thing is, “Modern Love” is the perfect song to jog to, so yes, it became something of an homage.”
