Making A Splash contains some of Peter Greenaway’s most tactile direction–a marriage of aquatic imagery, synchronized editing and bodies in motion. Droplets of water onto bright green leaves beget a series of juxtapositions: images of lakes, rivers and streams are inserted between shots of children using a water-slide, underwater hockey and, most extensively, a routine from The British Synchronized Swimming Team. Of note, especially, are Michael Nyman‘s sublime orchestral score (a frequent collaborator of Greenaway’s) and Michel Gemmell‘s sweeping underwater cinematography.
