Cinephiles, especially those enthusiastic about the avant-garde, are probably familiar with Robert Gardner‘s series Screening Room, which hosted numerous directors working in documentary and experimental film in the 1970s and early ’80s. Well, unbeknownst to me, Gardner hosted another show (or TV Spot) prior to his most famous series–Flaherty On Film, an apparent tribute to the Robert “The Father of Documentary Film” Flaherty. In the clip below, Gardner interviews Flaherty’s wife, who offers some keen insight into her husband’s invaluable movies. Other than this brief interview, no other clips of Flaherty On Film seem to exist on YouTube or elsewhere, unfortunately. Still, this is a neat little bit of history, and it’s a pleasure watching Gardner pay tribute to an artist so instrumental to his own work in ethnographic film.
