Carol Reed‘s Oliver!—a jovial adaptation of Lionel Bart‘s stage show from the Dickens novel—is the director’s only musical, as well as one of the most well-received projects in his imitable canon. A glimpse inside the making of that classic is presented in the form of this scrupulously shot 16mm footage, which follows, among many other things in its brief two minutes, child actor Mark Lester (who played the lead role of Oliver Twist) exploring the set. The film here is silent, but the images alone provide a vital encapsulation of the atmosphere surrounding the production of Reed’s beloved late-career success.
