This stunning animated film, Jumping, is a 1984 short written and directed by Tezuka Osamu, the legendary Japanese animator/cartoonist/producer/manga artist who is perhaps best known for creating Astro Boy. With this particular work, Osamu experiments (sans the assistance of CGI) with perspective through the first-person-point-of-view experience of a young child who begins bouncing down a road only to discover that each successive jump allows the ascension to higher and higher heights. What follows is a continuous but brief journey around the world featuring encounters with people and animals of all kinds and travels to places both rural and urban—through jungles, cities, skies, oceans, and even a nuclear warzone—before a quick but nevertheless unsettling detour to a certain underworld that luckily ejects the unseen protagonist right back to where the whole adventure began.
