As with yesterday’s post, here again we have a short-form work that was eventually expanded on and turned into a feature-length film by the director of the original. Today’s iteration of this style of adaptation is Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1988 shot-on-home-video/edited-with-two-VCRs short The Dirk Diggler Story, the precursor to his 1997 porn-industry opus Boogie Nights.

Whereas that breakout hit charts a Robert Altman-esque epic story with an ensemble cast, The Dirk Diggler Story is a mini-mockumentary based on the life of real porn actor John Holmes and inspired, according to Anderson himself, by This Is Spinal Tap.
