In case you missed it, the computer company Intel, in collaboration with W Hotels And Resorts, hosted a screenwriting competition last year called Four Stories. The winners were chosen by director Roman Coppola, and among them was this gem directed by the extremely talented music video director Kahlil Joseph. The short—an interpretation of the poem The Mirror Between Us by Rumi—is a lyrical account of two women vacationing in the Maldives Islands after an earthquake incident left them traumatized. Keeping in line with Joseph’s other work, the film creates a languorous and ethereal atmosphere through gliding camerawork and elliptical editing. He is quickly turning into a major voice, even with such a small body of work, and a filmmaker with a clear eye for expressive locations and imagery.
