The Annihilation of Fish

The Paradise has the Toronto premiere of the 4K DCP restoration of this long-lost Charles Burnett romantic comedy about “an eccentric pair [James Earl Jones & Lynn Redgrave] of aging and delusional visionaries who fight together to overcome loneliness and to rediscover a sense of purpose in their later years.” The film first premiered at TIFF and was acquired for distribution before a Variety pan supposedly sunk its wider release. The film has been out of circulation ever since and has taken Milestone Films — Burnett’s stalwart distribution and home video supporters — nineteen years to acquire the rights to the feature.
