Lukas Moodysson is a Swedish director whose films are festival staples, gathering international attention and awards for titles like Show Me Love (1998), Together (2000), and Lilja 4-ever (2002).
Lukas’ latest film, We Are the Best! (2013), is based on a graphic novel by Coco Moodysson and follows three outcast teen girls who form a punk band in early 1980s Stockholm. We had the opportunity to discuss the film in-depth with Lukas at our studio space in OCAD U’s Graduate Gallery during the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, including its soundtrack, Swedish films about children, and the film’s aesthetic.
Our interview with Lukas Moodysson was conducted in September of 2013 and was one of four feature interviews in the twenty-first monthly issue of The Seventh Art as a “video magazine.” It was released in August 2014 and is part of our TIFF 2013 coverage, along with interviews with Frederick Wiseman, Albert Serra, Corneliu Porumboiu, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Ben Wheatley, Ben Rivers & Ben Russell, Don McKellar, Stephanie Spray & Pacho Velez, João Pedro Rodrigues, Ramon Zürcher, Götz Spielmann, Elina Psikou, Mark Peranson, Erik Skjoldbjærg, Bruce LaBruce, Aran Hughes & Christina Koutsospyrou, and Frank Pavich.
