Pedro Costa is a Portuguese filmmaker, whose remarkable body of work includes Casa de lava (1994), Where Does Your Hidden Smile Lie? (2001), and a series of films that take place in the now razed Lisbon neighbourhood of Fontainhas: Ossos (1997), In Vanda’s Room (2000), and Colossal Youth (2006).
After a few drinks, it was our pleasure to welcome Pedro back to our studio space at CineCycle to discuss his latest film, Horse Money (2014), which just had its North American premiere at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. We talked about the film, some of Pedro’s intent (he “says too much” about its meaning), its production, critics writing about his films, and his thoughts on Jean-Luc Godard.
Our interview with Pedro Costa was conducted in September of 2014 and was one of first video releases outside of the The Seventh Art being a “video magazine.” It was released in September 2016 and is part of our TIFF 2014 coverage, along with interviews with the Safdie brothers, Claire Denis, Lisandro Alonso, Ruben Östlund, David Gordon Green, Peter Strickland, Fabrice du Welz, Matías Piñeiro, and Oscar Ruiz Navia.
